Different Greek organizations such as Beta Kappa Psi, Lambda Chi Rho, Zeta Phi Beta, Sigma Lambda Beta, Psi Sigma Phi, Kappa Alpha Psi, Lambda Theta Alpha, Lambda Theta Phi, Mu Sigma Upsilon, Theta Phi Alpha, and Lambda Sigma Upsilon all participated in the holiday fun.
When the boys first walked in, they were greeted by different Greeks of Kean University who had them fill out their names on little index cards, where the boy's names would later be pulled in a raffle full of prizes. The room was divided into four sections where each table contained a different Arts and Crafts segment in order to entertain the kids in and provoke their creativity. \
Next, the DJ, no other than KU's very own DJ Nix in the Mix - yes he does parties for children also- provided music for a good 'ol game of musical chairs. The boys were very excited and full of energy.
After musical chairs, Nix yelled out that it was time for a dance competition and the boys jumped up to exihibit their best moves. Matrix dancing was a new dance brought to the scene where the boys had to move in very slow motion as Nix slowed the music down. Whoever amongst the boys was able to move the slowest received a prize and also became crowned as best "Matrix Dancer".
Throughout the four hour period, the boys continued to create personalized Santa hats, miniature elves, and they even painted their own wooden ornaments. Nix also continued the special dance competitions and introduced new dances to the boys such as the Willy Bounce, Scooby Doo, over-the- head, and the Rock-away. This was the last and final competition of the afternoon and it proved that the boys could really get serious about their dance moves.
The competition boiled down to only four out of the fifty plus in attendance left standing to compete as the boys duked it out in hopes of winning the final competition. The boys pulled out moves of their own by doing back flips, high leg lifts, dances such as "the worm" and "back breaker".
John Diaz, Life skills instructor at Somerset Hills explained it was his fifth year back at Kean for the Holiday festivities. "Its great to be able to see the boys get loose and have fun because everything at the facility is so structured for them. A lot of the boys even cancelled their home visits just so they come here. As a staff, we also love to come here because Kean is very welcoming each year that we have came."
Towards the end of the day, the boys had an even bigger surprise; Santa Clause arrived with a huge bin of presents for every single boy there. The boys all lined up single file awaiting their turn to sit on Santa's lap to tell him what they wanted for Christmas.
Carlos T. Miranda of Lambda Theta Phi dressed as Santa Clause and had his "Ho, Ho, Ho" down to a science.
"I'm so happy I got the chance to spend the day with these boys they are all so sweet and funny. I can't wait until next year, said Nizihah Wilson.
